Here’s the study, published in a good journal just today.
Study design
They had 16 people driving during rush-hour traffic in Seattle. On one day, they outfitted the cars with a HEPA filter, and the other day, nada.
But it was blinded, so the participants didn’t know what they were getting. They measured blood pressure both during the drive and for 24 hours afterward.
Results
The results were a bit scary. The drivers without the HEPA filters had blood pressure 4.5 mmHg higher than the ones with the filtration.
That’s around as much as you would get from eating a high-sodium diet when you’re susceptible to sodium. And a lot of that effect lasted for 24 hours, at which point they stopped measuring.
Why broader air-pollution effects matter
