The ADHD reading problem
Here’s an ADHD hack for reading faster. This will be hands-on. And yes, this works for everyone.
Last time we covered how the two behaviors that limit your reading speed are when you keep jumping back and rereading the same thing, and when you’re not devoting full attention to the reading process. Squirrel.
Both of which are particularly limiting in ADHD. And yes, you could slowly train yourself, but… squirrel. So let’s use an app to take a shortcut.
Two useful app features
There are two key features. I’ve been looking for years, but I’ve only found one app that really nails them both by using text highlighting and auto scrolling. It’s like your finger, but better.
Let’s try it. This is with it set at 300 words per minute, already above the human average. Now at 500. We’re not done.
Adding audio for attention
Second is to create a multisensory experience, adding sound to capture the full attention. This takes some getting used to, but I’ve used it to read at literally 900 words per minute.
Ready? Let’s start at 500.
App recommendation and disclosure
The app is called Speechify, and I’ve used it to listen to more than 32 million words. This is not sponsored. I still pay for it. It’s a bit pricey and occasionally buggy.
But I did reach out to them and convince them to give you guys the biggest discount code they have ever offered anyone: 32% off. Use code Distilled Science 32 or click my link.
Additional Notes
Caption context
The caption challenges viewers to compare how well they can read at higher speed with and without audio. It also says the app has been one of the creator’s four pinned home-screen apps for years, as well as a frequently used browser extension.
