Normally I would start getting into the math and talking about thermal conductivity and specific heat and all that, but let’s try to take a slightly different tack.

Air versus water heat transfer

Let’s play a little game of would you rather step outside on the coldest day you have ever experienced, say negative 10 or negative 15 degrees Fahrenheit, or jump into a tub of water that is 40 degrees?

If you have ever experienced the latter, you will know that it is so much worse than the cold air, because air does not conduct heat nearly as well as water does. There are just not as many molecules there to bump into you.

Antarctica, cryotherapy, and freezing water

Why am I talking about this? Because the coldest day ever recorded in Antarctica is -128.6 degrees Fahrenheit, or -89.2 degrees Celsius. I am betting Canada is not currently that cold.
